Rare Salviati & Co. Murano Glass Mosaic Triptych 'Venezia'
Monumental triptych spanning 315,5 cm width and 189 cm in height. It consists of equal 3 parts, each 105cm wide (for transport). Executed in the late 19th century, this monumental work is composed of thousands of hand-cut Murano glass tesserae set into three substantial cement-backed panels. The composition captures the islands of Venice in rich terracotta tones against a aquatic field of aquamarine, lapis, and teal, utilizing the varying depths of the glass to create texture and light refraction.
The work is anchored by the inscription 'VENEZIA' in gold-leaf tesserae, accompanied by the authentic 'SALVIATI & C.' signature and a detailed compass rose. This piece exemplifies the technical mastery that made Salviati the premier mosaicist of the Victorian era, famed for commissions ranging from the Paris Opera to St. Paul's Cathedral.
