"The Ulrike Meinhof Shopping Bag" Installation by Eduard Van Giel (2017)
Détails du produit
This is a contemporary mixed-media installation by the Belgian artist Eduard Van Giel, dated 2017. The work is titled "The Ulrike Meinhof Shopping Bag" and is part of his "Molotov Factory" project.
Part of the artist's "Molotov Factory" series, this work is composed of a central freestanding sculpture and three accompanying wall-mounted panels. The centerpiece features a clear acrylic vitrine on a metal pedestal, housing a white handbag modified with an assemblage of exposed electronic wiring, circuit boards, flashing red LED digital counters, a revolver, and handcuffs. The surrounding wall panels continue the industrial-electronic aesthetic, featuring backlit imagery, photographic transfers of figures (referencing the historical context of the RAF), and integrated circuit board lighting.
The piece is a conceptual commentary referencing Ulrike Meinhof, a co-founder of the West German far-left militant group the Red Army Faction (RAF). The installation juxtaposes the banality of a consumer object (the white handbag) with the threatening iconography of terrorism (wires, timers, a gun, handcuffs). It includes a freestanding sculptural element and accompanying wall-mounted light boxes.
